Now, no matter how charming I am on my blog I know you are going to go out and buy instructional DVD’s and as well you should, but buyer beware not all DVD’s are created equal. So this week we are looking at Bar Doctors Working Flair Starter Kit, and Christian Delpech Working Flair Volume 3 and four. Two really well made “how to” DVD’s. So which one do ya buy? Well it depends on what you are looking for.
If you are just starting to flair bar tend and you are looking to learn some great moves that aren’t too hard to learn then I have to suggest Bar Doctors and your Bar Doctors on call resident Chad Tocco (The instructor.) I had a hard time finding too much info on Chad Tocco, but if you watch his training video trailer it doesn’t take long to discover that he is a very talented flair bar tender.
Bar Doctors. The DVD begins and you are wowed buy some nicely edited clips of Chad flair bar tending. When the menu pops up you have four training options. Drink Sequence, Which is a sequence of 15 moves or tricks put into a small routine that incorporates every thing needed to make the drink, the glass, the ice, the tin ,etc etc. Non Risk Flair, Fun Tricks, and “the” Water Fall Pour.
Bar Doctors: The routine is fast and safe and visually impressive. I can imagine that lots of bar tenders will get paid or laid from applying this routine to his or her bar tending. I like the close slow motion used in the instruction and I really liked that he put flair into all parts of the drink, buy using every thing from the glass to the garnish. Chad teaches you some simple fun tricks that can be done with little to zero risk to your self , the bar, or the customer. The sequence is broken down into about 15 different moves and certain tricks like move 9 and move 12 which could pass for one trick just done in reverse are broken down into 2 different moves and taught separately, making learning easy for every one. The non risk section. I love the non risk flair tricks, napkins, garnish, blah, blah, blah and Chad teaches you a flashy straw trick that will always look good no matter how busy you are.
Bar Doctors is a really well made instructional video made by a really great bar tender. If you are looking to learn advanced competitive flair bar tending then this might not be the video for you, but if you are looking to learn a couple moves to add some flow to your gig behind the bar and have a little more fun at work then this is definitely the video for you and hey for $35.95 why not. The second DVD that we are looking at this week is Christian Delpech Working Flair Volume three and 4: Well, 16 time world champion, uh well you know who Christian Delpech is, if you didn’t you wouldn’t be reading this article. So lets take a look at Working flair vol 3 and four. This 2 disc DVD set is packed with massive moves, cleaner combinations, and “the most beautiful variations ever.” Christian advises you to buckle your seat belt as he takes your flair to the next level and he makes good on his promise. Using slow motion, multiple angles, alternative views, and a narrated explanation of each trick Christian teaches you advanced moves and shows you how to create that award winning flow behind the bar with fluid routines that include everything you would need to make the drink from the glass to the booze in it, Christian even even has you flairing with the Wunder Bar gun. Each disc has 6 menus to choose from, allowing you to skip around from bottle tin, to flair with garnishes, to pours and cuts, or maybe you want to go straight to learning some routines. His style of instruction is really clean. he clearly demonstrates how to do each move and follows it up with a voice over instructor while he demonstrates the move in slow motion. So all those moves you see at Legends and go, ” wait a minute what” cause they happen so fast are slowed down so that you can “ohhhhhhhh shit, thats how you do that.”
Working flair three and 4 is a perfect DVD package for anyone who has mastered the basics and is looking to up their game a little. Christian teaches some transitions so if you have been wondering how you can link all your individual tricks together this DVD will give you some good ideas.
